Report Templates - Details Column

Topic: Report Templates - Details Column

Hi,

Have had clients, particularly those with many users and report templates, suggest that to make understanding what each report template performs, is to have a dedicated Column next to the Report Template Name. See image to help better explain what I mean.

I would be keen on other thoughts around this.

To me it does make a lot of sense as it would allow a short Report Name while providing for a more detailed explanation of what the particular report achieves, this does not need to be inserted into the actual report.

Cheers.

Re: Report Templates - Details Column

I think it Could be a Mouseover text or clickable "?" in front of report template .

We should be able to customize the content text for each report template when creating the report.

Could be new filed in report properties advanced settings ?

Re: Report Templates - Details Column

First of all, we should think, that we have a drop-down list with the reports. And it won't consist any additional information. So a short Report Name can make more harm than benefit in this case.

I should notice, that long reports name is a very common situation. So if we add some more text there, it can occupy the half of monitor.
And if users make not informative and not structured report names, can anybody guarantee, that descriptions would be clear?

But we can think about information, that exists now, to add to report mouseover tooltip. Ex., report type (unit, unit group or driver), bound elements.
Can this information be useful?

Hi tata,

Our thought was just one of simplicity to assist users more easily identify what the report is/for and assist these users in selecting/modifying or generating the most appropriate report.

Particularly where there may be a large number of reports & users for the account. Ideally this information would not be included in the report generated, existing title should be enough one would think.

A mouse over of sorts would assist, our thought was to simply add, visually withing Wialon, an editable 2 line description of report purpose.

I have attached an image of a past platform we still have as a legacy (not a great platform) but it might further provide an idea of what i am meaning. Although this image is not what we suggest, however the Report Title and the Report "Description" is close to what we mean. In Wialon Title could remain same as is now and the added second column (from our earlier image) would contain a brief 2 line (max) description that would not need to be generated with the report.

if something like this could be achieved through a mouse over it would still be of good benefit. :-)

Re: Report Templates - Details Column

I try to find a way to simpler identify what the report is/for.
We have such elements as notifications, jobs. Mouse over their names shows information about them.
I  offer the same to reports. And it will show mostly such information as on your screenshot.

Re: Report Templates - Details Column

tata, that would prove quite beneficial to users, particularly where there are many users and many reports in their accounts.

Additionally, it will also assist with new customers when they are becoming familiar with things, as like most others would, we provide a set of "standard" report templates for their account.

Re: Report Templates - Details Column

Hello, Alan!

Nice to see your activity on our forum and here's some good news for you!

Tooltips in Wialon beta-version have become more informative as well as more convenient to use. For instance, report template tooltip now contains the information on report type, bound units, and the list of tables. This allowed us to combine several steps (open report settings, scroll the list of tables, and go through configuration) into one (point on a report template) which significantly saves your time.
