Fuel sensors for light vehicles

Тема: Fuel sensors for light vehicles

Hello Everyone

So, once again, someone asks how to best monitor fuel level inside light vehicles (cars, pickups, 4x4s).

I know that the options out are not great. But unfortunately this is a regular request in tenders and even though we try our best to explain that the solutions won't be great, they still push with this requirement.

We did a trial about 3 years ago with Cellocator and their fuel level gauge reader. As it turned out, the float sensor on the vehicle on which we tried sent out a nonlinear voltage signal.  We were using another platform at the time that didn't support calibration tables so the readings didn't match at all what was happening and we dropped the idea, just focusing on fuel monitoring for heavy vehicles where a capacitive sensor can be installed.

I've been looking around on the forum and here are the two options:

We will try in the upcoming tender to change their minds about spending their money on something that won't really fulfill their needs, but if we can't, I want to know if any of you care to share their experience with these options.

  • What can we expect from them?
  • What kind of accuracy can you acheive?
  • What are the practical limitations?
  • What are recurrent issues if any?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience, it will be very much appreciated!

Robert

I think guardmagic is the way to go, my clients in Europe have cero issues, in any case resistive adapters can't be better than capacitive ones, good luck !

Contactless reader on engine injector: https://www.jv-technoton.com/contactles … ecrocodile

this device is about CONSUMPTION of fuel, not the level of fuel.

For fuel level from standard sensors, you can use Technoton's CAN fuel gauge (based on  MasterCAN DAC15 device).
Briefly: input - voltage/frequency, output - CAN (J1939). You can make a calibration table "fuel level to fuel volume" and get FMS-message to your tracking device.

About Installation Additional Fuel Sensor in Car Fuel Tanks
Very often there are many problem to install additional fuel level sensor in car regular fuel tank:
-car regular fuel tanks have so different and often “exotic” shapes that is not possible to find free place to install additional fuel sensor;
-very often car fuel tanks are very thin, -about 10 ..15 cm, that make problem to find fuel sensor necessary length;
-for the installation additional fuel level sensor in car will be need to remove regular fuel tank from car (for this will be need the car lift) and make tank degassing from gasoline vapors;
-each fuel level sensor has the head. This can make problems for the fuel tank installation in car. Can be not any free space for the head of new fuel sensor.

All this points make installation procedure of additional fuel level sensor enough expensive, uneconomical or even physically impossible.

1) correct, - becouse additional (capacitive) fuel level sensor have more high  resolution than car regular furl sensor.

2) but very often it does not matter (for cars etc. )

Also, keep in mind this,  resistive sensor built-in the pump assembly is a very noisy component, after a few years it starts degrading and send a lot of false or noisy data, in new cars it works without problems!
