“Passengers” Module

In addition to personal tracking tools, driver behavior monitoring and speed limit violation control, dealing mostly with humans, rather than vehicles, we are developing “Passengers” module, allowing for passenger count based on RFID-technologies.

Initially while creating a new module we focused on scheduled passenger transportation in hot countries, such as the UAE, facing the issue of child mortalities during school bus transportation -  once a pupil falls asleep and left alone in a bus at temperatures above 50 °C, the results may be fatal. But the extended functionality of Wialon system the scope of its application is much broader.

With the new functionality in Wialon system a driver is always sure that all the children have successfully left the bus remaining parked in the blazing heat, while parents know that their child will definitely get to school.

How it works?

  • A bus is equipped with a GPS tracker and registered as a unit in Wialon system;
  • Every passenger has an RFID-tag which is applied to a reader notifying the system that a passenger enters or leaves a bus.
  • Associated persons get notifications, reports on movements and can look through or edit historical data.

System novelties

  • New “Passengers” tab in the monitoring panel;
  • Two types of notifications added;
    “Passenger activity” notification is intended for parents and created separately for each passenger to signify entering or leaving the bus. Thus parents are automatically informed that the child has got to school.

    “Passenger alert” notification is intended for school employees/drivers and triggers whenever a passenger is left in a bus. After the notification is received a teacher can contact a pupil or a driver to check the bus again.

  • Reports on passengers with the option to display geofence name as an address;
  • New passenger boarding sensor;
  • Options to specify name, add photo and fill in custom fields (school, form, phone, etc.) for each passenger;
  • New “Passengers” service in CMS Manager;
  • New access rights to work with passengers;
  • Core information on each passenger, including the last event (pick-up/drop-off location; “unknown”), available in tooltip.

Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

Institutions/Organizations

  • Attendance report for schoolchildren/employees;
  • Children pick-up and drop-off notifications for parents/teachers (indicating location);
  • Reports on passenger movements for any period of time;
  • Immediate alerts if a passenger stays in a bus for more than “X” minutes;

Carriers

  • Reports on passenger flow (loading of a particular bus and passenger flow density) to optimize the number of vehicles on the route;
  • Passenger count for tourist traffic;
  • Labour hours (e.g. interval between a drop-off and a pick-up) calculation for specialists operating in remote facilities;
  • Quick identification of a particular unit/driver if a problem occurs.

The new module is already available in Wialon Beta and now that you know it, we are looking forward to your questions and suggestions!

Poal ,
I logged in with the beta branch , But I don't see Passengers on the right of the menu ..
Do I have to enable Passenger service under services for the relevant account on CMS ? But I don't see " passengers" under service to enable it disable it.
Am I doing something wrong ?

I suppose it does not matter about the RFID tag so long as it can be read by a reader and transferred to the GPS device. So the tag could be a passive tag.

Re: Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

Hey, JohnG!

1. Right, "Passenger Alarm" triggers when a passenger is in the reader range for too long. It has been done for the school buses in hot countries, where children frequently fall asleep in the buses and left alone in a locked vehicle, but it can laso be used for other purposes.

2. The passengers can be bound to any unit, just create a route for it. (route-unit => unit-passengers connection). By clicking on the unit icon in the round we center the unit on the map. The list of passengers is available on tooltip.

3. As for the Sensolator - you can't do it directly. But you can still create a report on passengers and view it in Sensolator app.

Re: Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

For school buses we are looking forward for key features like.

1. Provide id card to each students as well as bus driver and support staff traveling with students.
2. Alarm send to parents as soon as student board and leave the bus at designated stops.
3. Alarm send to school and parents when student board or leave the bus at non designated stops.
4. Alarm send to school and/or driver if student board the wrong bus.
5. SMS message (vehicle will arrive in 15 min.) send to parents when bus enter the students residential area.
6. Vehicle arrival time message should be triggered only say, 7am-8am (pickup) and 1pm-2pm (drop back).
7. Parents should be able to view the bus online (using locator) only when the bus is inside the geofence of the respective residential area.
8. The RFID reader should read all the student/ staff tag at certain intervals during the journey from home to school and school to office.
9. Able to bind the bus driver and support staff to a certain bus so alarm is triggered when staff switch over to another bus without the supervisors knowledge.
10. Send weekly / monthly student inside the bus attendance report to parents.
11. Send alerts if student sleep off inside the bus when the vehicle is switched off or after a certain period of time overstayed in the bus inside school geofence.
12. Student leave report calendar where students can inform his absence in advance, so driver will be notified that student is on leave and can skip the designated bus stop.

I will keep posting about new feedback from school transport department as and when available

Hi ,

How does Wialon identify check in and check out ?

I tested with a tag ; and what I understood was first reading of the tag ID is considered as "Check In" and the next reading of the same ID is considered as "Check out"  , is this correct or are you using a different method to track Check in and Check out , such as a "passenger unbound " or  "Tag unbound" parameter from the GPS tracker ?

Re: Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

Hi Alek We have been asked by a number of customers (bus operators) about being able to identify empty seats on a bus. So I was hoping we could some how link a ticket to a seat and a ticket to a passenger. So when the passenger is detected as on the bus the seat would turn red.

Ideally we would have individual sensors on the seats and these would trigger the sensors that would be seen in Sensolator.

Re: Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

JohnG, that's an interesting idea but I cannot see how it is really connected with school bus solution (or it's just a separate idea?).
The point is that when a school bus leaves its station, the driver already knows which addresses he should visit and what number of students is expected on the bus in the end...

P.S. Notification "Passenger Alarm" is designed to notify the school when a passenger is left on the bus. It triggers when specified timeout of being on board is exceeded.

Re: Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

JohnG, I believe it's not the same. In School Bus solution you track individual people (personally, knowing even their names). In case of public transport, you would probably track just the number of passengers on the bus — it's not so personal.

Re: Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

We need to be able to create "Passenger´s groups"... So we can assign all the passengers per each bus...

Then we will also need to be able to create a report "Group of Passengers" and get group bindings as actually we can get only binding report per passenger and a normal "yellow bus" carries 50-60 passengers, it will be easier to have the binding report for the entire bus (group).

Re: Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

jhdeguate, what is exactly the point of groups of passengers? They cannot be assigned onto one bus because there's no such function to assign passengers manually. The whole point of this new module is to be able to automatically detect passengers on buses.

The issue with reports is clear. I agree.

Re: Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

Thanks Alex... the points are:

1) If we are thinking on "school buses" we usually will now wich passengers are "assigned" in each bus, so if we have (for example) a college with 10 buses and 50 passengers per bus, it will be easier for us  to create 10 groups (every bus is a group), and put their passengers on each specific group.  And as all the bindings are done automatically, depending on bus routing performing, and as Wialon is showing with vehicle´s icon next to each passenger wich vehicle is attached to each passenger (I love this, is very helpfull), it will be easier to know wich passengers are not in the bus or waiting to be picked up, if we have the chance to get "passenger´s grouped".  In the other hand, if we don´t have "passenger´s grouped" we will have those 500 passengers in only ONE huge list and we won´t know wich passenger belongs to wich bus.

2) Having passengers "grouped" per bus, will be easier to get the specific BUS (group of passengers), binding report.

Having "passenger groups" will make us (talking on my case and hope there are several other distributors agree with me), the control A LOT easier,

...

Hope I have explained myself and you are 100% agree with me (this time) Alek...

Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

Re: Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

I was trying to configure "Passenger Alarm" in notification, I noticed the timeout shows in "min". What I understand is if I update 60min, the Alarm will trigger after 60 min from the clock IN time. suppose the bus pickup the first student at 6:30am, the alarm will trigger at 7:30am. When the bus pickup the last student say, at 7:00am, the alarm will trigger at 8:00am. It will be a tedious task to select the Timeout for each students. There are many reasons the bus can arrive late to school due to traffic, breakdown etc. In this case the alarm will trigger and cause unnecessary panic. The alarm should trigger after the set timeout interval when the bus reach the school premises or based on the school starting time.
Example (case1) : The bus reach the school at 8:00am and the alarm will trigger at 9:00am if any students are left inside and timeout set at 60min.
Example (case2) : The school will start at 8:15am and the alarm timeout set at 60min should be activated at 8:15am and trigger at 9:15am if any student is left inside.
A second timeout should be included after the school closing time to ensure no students are left inside the bus, for the management to ensure safety at both directions. After dropping the students, the driver can take the bus back to school yard, drop in workshop for maintenance jobs, go for a lunch, take rest at his residence and drop back the bus back to school during evening time, leave the bus near his residence for the next days trip etc. etc.
Need to to close all loopholes to ensure safety by releasing this module.
More suggestions in the coming days...........

Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

Re: Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

Under passenger properties can you add 2 fields as Address and Security
Address is where we can capture the drop off point of the said child and once system knows all the children in the bus and the address it must do an automated routing of all drop off points, and should also allow use of navigation devices to give the driver the shortest routes or just to show him the route. so if child B is not in the bus that day the route is not assigned and driver does not have to worry about the route system will calculate.
Security am thinking of how we can capture a pin code, card or finger of the guardian who will collect the child from the bus and have proof that the child was collected into safe hands. This option is most ideal for pre-school kids

44

Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

Re: Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

Regy, thank you for you feedback.

In case of address, it will work only for routes back home and will not work for routes to deliver children to school, right? And what kind of device are you intended to use for navigation and how will this device retrieve addresses from students exactly?

Security is a tricky point here, too. Maybe pin code or another rfid card is OK but fingerprints... I believe this type of data is not so easy to store. Maybe, just a photograph of a guardian will do?

Re: Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

Hi Alek, thanks for the response

Routes yes will only work one way when delivering the kids home that should be fine, for navigation using Galileo and Garmin device should show the route to the driver and can the system then automatically workout a route
on security i guess a pin code or card will be fine then cause with these a driver can confirm if an identified pin code or card has been used. On the issue of photo how does it work maybe it will be good too.

46

Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

Re: Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

It's kind of really simple with photos. You can even now add a guardian's photo to student's properties — as a custom field with URL leading to this photo.
However, the point here is that the driver should have access to this info anyway (a tablet device maybe?). And when a child checks out, how would the driver know who exactly is checking out, because rfid reader transmits info to the tracker and not to the driver...

Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

Re: Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

The idea of having passengers to have their addresses captured in configuration then leading to creating a route for the same delivery of boarded passengers. If this is done the use of a navigation device which shows the route can also display who is dropping at which point that way it also help the driver to know that at every drop off the particular children have dropped off. It will solve the issue of some children that will sleep in the bus and wont disembark, cause the driver will know how many are dropping off with their names. Now on the issue of showing a photo of the guardian who is supposed to collect the child i guess the same display of the navigation can be used every drop off shows the child and the guardian but  how can we verify this in the system, this way we are left to rely on the driver. I would say if this feature can see the light of the day a photo might be weak feature which is not verified by the system, a pin or card will be ideal in my view or maybe if a pin or card is used then it shows the photo of the guardian collecting the child to the driver on the navigation device if you want to take it further, my thoughts

Re: Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

Passengers module is constantly being improved to move beyond school buses monitoring. It’s currently used to track employees to track employees 24/7. Here automatic unbinding at 00:00 is no more applicable. That’s why in Wialon Beta we implemented automatic unbinding 10 hours after passenger pick-up. If this happens, you can see “automatic unbinding” mark in passenger history. The update helps to eliminate pretended passengers remaining inside a vehicle for days, weeks, years... Moreover adequate passenger unbinding improves the accuracy of data in reports and statistics.

Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

Re: Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

Considering the increasing popularity of Passengers module we are on our way to completely integrate it into the system. This time Wialon Beta acquired updated “Search on Map” tool, allowing for dynamic search by passengers. Upon clicking on the target passenger the map is automatically scaled and centered on the unit transporting the passenger or a drop-off point.

Thus, knowing a single passenger name, you can easily find the relevant transport vehicle. Moreover, you get visualisation of passenger location with no need to study statistics and reports.

Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

Passengers are now represented in one of statistical reports. Resource contents report in CMS Manager contains data on passenger quantity. That way you get most comprehensive information on resource contents.

Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

In addition, while transferring resource contents, data on passengers is available for export/import.

Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

Re: Testing: "Passengers" module (School Buses)

Hello again, now how can i make a specific user to be able only to see specific passengers on his own account ? do i need to create a new resource for each student and assign each user to the required resource. I think it would be better if you can add to the Access Menu under the user setting an option to select Passengers.
For example if i have 10 students and 10 guardian's accounts, i need only each guardian to see his own student.

Thanks

I wonder whether Active RFID solution includes the describes features on alarm being sent to a parent once a student boards and leaves the bus at certain stops? Have you integrated this into the system?

Maybe custom development using SDK/API

Anyone tried Active RFIDs ? with our experience this doesn't work well.

I'm not sure that this manufacturer makes Active RFID too.
